Walter Key (Superintendent)

Walter Key has been superintendent at SAISD since December 2, 2007. Prior to his coming to SAISD he was High School Principal at Rosebud-Lott ISD. Mr Key began teaching/coaching at Buffalo ISD in 1984. He has taught and coached at several east Texas schools. Key graduated from the University of Arkansas with a BS in History.  Later he graduated from Steven F. Austin University with a Masters of Education in educational leadership. While superintendent, we have contested TEA over a large amount of money and WON! While this had TEA send our district over $1,300,000, it also required TEA to send more than $50,000,000 to over 150 school districts in the state. We have recently passed a Tax Ratification Election with a 4 to 1 vote in favor of this proposition. Our district is Recognized for the first time under this present accountability system.   We have managed our finances to the point we can offer an above base salary that is very competitive with our surrounding neighbors.  Also, we offer free daycare and Pre-K for our employees. Our challenge this year is to raise our commended rate in all tested subjects. Also, on ongoing need is to raise our expectations for college and career readiness.  Our students must be better prepared for college or career. At SAISD this is one of our primary challenges and as our Curriculum Director said recently, "Your child's future is our inspiration."

Patti McLerran - Chief Financial Officer
Patti R. McLerran has been with SAISD as the Business Manager/CFO since 1983.  She graduated from San Augustine High School in 1974 and then attended Sam Houston State University where she received a Bachelor of Business degree.Patti completed her Master of Education degree at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1989.

Barry Ford - Director of Special Programs 
Angleton HS, Stephen   F   Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters. He began his tenure in San Augustine ISD in 1986. He brings 23 years of experience as a teacher, coach and administrator to SAISD. He currently serves as Director of Special Programs.

I attended Texas Southern University and Panola Junior College.  In 1992, I started working for SAISD as an aide.  In 1994 I became the High School Secretary.  During the 1999 school year, I became the Peims/Registrar.  Currently, I hold the position Director of Child Nutrition.

Jena Boyette - District Librarian
I graduated from San Augustine High School and then moved to Nacogdoches to attend Stephen F. Austin.  I graduated SFASU with a BS in Elementary Education in 1993.  I came back to San Augustine and began teaching 4th grade in 1994.  In 1996 I began teaching 3rd grade and also graduated from SFASU with a Master's degree in Elementary Education.  In 2005 I began working on a Library Science Certification from Texas A&M at Commerce and also took over as the District Librarian for SAISD.  

Shelia Horrocks - Director of Special Education
Graduate of Stephen F. Austin with a Master of Education and Texas Educator Certificates in Special Education, Educational Diagnostician, Elementary Self Contained, Visually Impaired, Early Childhood Education and a Principal Certification.  Responsibilities include, administering diagnostic instruments to identify students with disabilities.

Laura Smith, R.N. - District Nurse
I grew up in Houston, attended college in Arkansas where I earned my B.S. degree in Office Administration in 1978. I received my A.D.N. and R.N. license in 1994. My nursing career began in a hospital in the labor and delivery department. I worked the past 14 years as an elementary school nurse in West Columbia, TX. I moved to San Augustine in the summer of 2009 and began working as the district’s school nurse.
