GT Students Explore Civil Engineering

San Augustine Elementary 4th and 5th grade Gifted and Talented students
completed an in depth study of careers as a civil engineer. The students
researched the specific job of a civil engineer in reference to the building of
bridges. An engineer must be able to design safe and stable structures in
any location. Research was also conducted on the different construction
types of bridges. After gathering research, the students the students then
drafted a bridge design they felt would have the maximum weight capacity
for certain geographical areas. Construction of the bridges had to follow
specific guidelines in reference to the supplies that could be used. After
the bridge models were completed they, were tested for weight holding
capacity. The holding capacity of the stick bridges ranged from 50-25
pounds.
