A Message from Supt. Dr. Liepman concerning School Closings

Dear SAISD Employees, Students, and Community Members,

It has been a challenging start for San Augustine Independent School District. Our schools were closed this past week due to the effects of the powerful storm Harvey after only 3 days of our new school year. This storm continued to drop epic amounts of rain over our area causing severe flooding, and road and highway closures.

School will be closed again tomorrow, Friday, September 1, but the High School Cafeteria will be open from 8:00am - 10:00am for breakfast and a sack lunch. Students are encouraged to come and eat if possible. SAISD will resume classes on Tuesday, September, 5, 2017.

In regard to how the school closures will affect our district, the following email was sent to
Superintendents in Texas from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) on August 29.
Commissioner of Education, Mike Morath, has given permission to all school districts and charter schools that fall within Gov. Greg Abbott’s disaster proclamation for Hurricane Harvey to apply for missed school day waivers for all scheduled instructional days missed, according to a press release from the Texas Education Agency. These waivers will excuse school systems that fall within the declared disaster counties from having to make up missed days due to Hurricane Harvey.

According to the TEA release on August 29, there were 58 counties listed on Governor Abbott’s disaster proclamation. San Augustine County was not included on that initial list; however, San Augustine County was added to Governor Abbott's disaster list on Wednesday, August 30.

We at SAISD are confident that the flooding is over, our kids are safe, and that we will have a great 2017-2018 school year. San Augustine ISD sends prayers for everyone in Houston and the surrounding areas as well as our own County as we recover from this storm. It has been a pleasure to work with our County officials who have gone over and above to insure the safety of our children and our community.

                                                       We are Wolf Pack strong!

SAISD will resume classes on Tuesday, September, 5, 2017.

Sincerely,
Virginia Liepman
Superintendent of Schools
San Augustine ISD
