SAISD Heart Screening: A Success!!

San Augustine ISD partnered with Who We Play www.whoweplayfor.org an organization whose mission is to reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death in teens and young adults by providing affordable cardiac screenings to students with an ECG (electrocardiogram). An ECG can detect issues with the heart that can be missed in a standard physical, possibly preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest
(SCA). SCA is the #1 killer of student-athletes.
SAISD was able to offer this heart screening free this school year to student-athletes, band, and cheerleaders due to the generous donation from The Cody Stephens Foundation.  www.thecodystephensfoundation.org Cody died in 2012 from an undiagnosed heart issue, and his family started the foundation to make sure other families don't have to experience the same pain.
Nathan Schwarz with Who We Play For stated that "1 in 1000 of those they screen will have a severe abnormality on their ECG." The SAISD school nurses, Karen Noble and Jennifer Ferguson, who organized this event, would like to thank the administration and school board for their help in making the heart screening possible. They would also like to thank the following SAISD parent volunteers, Chelsi Ellerbe, MA, and Crystal Mosby, Panola LVN graduate. Our staff member volunteers were Jena Boyette, Kenya Watts, Ethan Perkins, Brandi Nichols and Lisa Zela who all worked very hard to organize the day.

Students helping out were Jordan Sterns, Jakira Hewitt, and LaChardanae Fowler. The event was a great success, screening over 100 students.
